Details
NewTown is collaborating with Side Street Projects in Pasadena to create an ephemeral, temporal and experimental gallery space in tents, gutted buses, trailers and other temporary or mobile interiors. This event is part of the next Pasadena Art Night and will attract several thousand people.
There are no parameters for the artwork except that it should complement the space used. These works will be seen by families. Although difficult content is always encouraged by NewTown, there are limits on graphic depictions and language we need to observe to stay within appropriate norms of taste for audiences of all ages..
Submission Process
1. We will accept entries by "snail" mail (hard copies and disc - at least one digital version must be included) or digital submission: email attachments, Dropbox, YouSendIt, Google docs, a personal blog, or a website link (Internet submission is encouraged).
2. Include a 100 to 300 word description (a Word .doc or .pdf) which includes:
- materials
- dimensions
- format (ie, sculpture, installation, video projection, dance, performance art, music, spoken word, audio work, etc)
- estimated total wattage of all equipment including lights
- content/meaning of work
- 2 site choices (provide a 1st choice and 2nd choice) for example: Choice #1- Yellow school bus, Choice #2--the Office trailer. If your work will be inside of a portable enclosure such as a tent, include whether you will supply your own or not, and the dimensions.
3. 5-10 digital still images (.jpg or .png or .pdf) or Quicktime documentation of past works/performances similar to the one being proposed. Include description of all images submitted (title, year, dimensions, materials, format, location).
4. 1-3 digital images of proposed work (scanned sketches, illustrations and diagrams of new work or digital stills of the existing work).
Solar power will be used to get electricity to any artwork needing it (this is why we ask for wattage). Artists who require a large amount of wattage, will possibly need to supply their own generator to power their electronics. We also ask that artists illuminate their own performances and artworks using LED or low wattage fluorescent light bulbs.
We have two days available for on-site visits in order for you to make a proper assessment of the spaces to decide which space works best with your project, but please keep in mind you should be versatile in case we need to change the space used (i.e. have a back-up plan). If you do not make a site visit then you will be required to bring your own space (i.e. your own tent) and please describe in detail the space you will be using (include dimensions). If you do not have your own space and you do not make a site visit you will not be considered.
Any amplified sound must be minimal and will only be available the night of March 9th, but not the day of the 10th.
There is also an opportunity for a community involved workshop. Contact us if you were interested in being involved. Additional honorarium to be determined.
You can send the application to info@newtownarts.org or to 2259 Country Club Drive, Altadena, CA 91001.
